Motorcyclist Injured in Regional Road Crash: What We Know So Far
Emergency services rushed to the Regional Road in Msida yesterday afternoon following a collision involving a motorcycle and a car. The motorcyclist, a 28-year-old man, was left with serious injuries and was swiftly transported to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment.
The Scene and the Aftermath
The crash occurred near the Msida Bastion, a historic landmark that stands tall along the bustling Regional Road. Witnesses reported seeing the motorcycle, a sleek black Yamaha, skidding to a halt after the impact, its rider lying motionless on the tarmac. The car, a silver Renault Clio, sustained significant damage to its front end.
Traffic along this major thoroughfare, a crucial link between Msida and Birkirkara, was brought to a standstill as police and Civil Protection Department officials worked to secure the scene and divert traffic. Commuters were left inching along the alternative routes, with some reporting delays of up to an hour.
Investigations Underway
The Malta Police Force has launched an investigation into the incident. Early reports suggest that the motorcycle was traveling towards Birkirkara when it was involved in a collision with the car, which was heading in the opposite direction. However, no official cause has been attributed yet.
Inspector Joseph Muscat from the Malta Police Force Traffic Department told Hot Malta, “We are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the incident or have dashcam footage to come forward. Any information, no matter how small, could prove crucial to our investigation.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Malta Police Force on 119 or visit their website to submit a report.
Road Safety in Malta: A Persistent Concern
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent road safety concerns in Malta. According to the National Statistics Office, there were 1,253 road traffic accidents in Malta in 2020, resulting in 14 fatalities and 285 serious injuries.
Motorcyclists, in particular, are among the most vulnerable road users. The Malta Road Safety Council has been advocating for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, better road infrastructure, and enhanced rider training to improve safety for motorcyclists.
Hot Malta reached out to the Malta Road Safety Council for comment. A spokesperson said, “We extend our best wishes to the injured motorcyclist and urge all road users to exercise caution and respect for each other. Together, we can make our roads safer.”
