Motorcyclist Injured in Regional Road Crash

Motorcyclist Hospitalised After Regional Road Crash

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a collision on the Regional Road in Msida yesterday, where a motorcyclist was left injured and a car badly damaged. The incident, which occurred around 5 pm, caused traffic chaos during the evening rush hour.

What Happened?

The motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man from Birkirkara, was traveling towards Msida when he collided with a car turning left from Triq San Pawl into Triq il-Kbira. The force of the impact sent the motorcyclist crashing to the ground, while the car ended up on the pavement, narrowly missing pedestrians.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the motorcyclist lying injured on the road and the car’s driver in shock. “I saw the motorcyclist coming fast and the car just turned in front of him,” said one witness, who wished to remain anonymous.

Aftermath and Investigation

The motorcyclist was taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance, where he was treated for suspected broken ribs and a head injury. His condition is stable but he remains under observation. The car’s driver, a 48-year-old woman from Msida, was also taken to hospital for shock but has since been discharged.

Police closed off the road for several hours while they investigated the cause of the crash. Forensic experts examined the scene, and both vehicles were removed for further inspection. A police spokesperson confirmed that an investigation is ongoing and appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

This incident comes just a week after a similar crash on the same road, raising concerns about safety in the area. Local residents have been calling for improvements to the road’s design and traffic management, citing the high volume of traffic and the lack of safe crossing points.

“We’ve been saying for years that something needs to be done about this road,” said a resident who lives near the crash site. “It’s only a matter of time before something more serious happens.”

Safety Concerns and Calls for Action

Malta’s Regional Roads have long been a source of concern for road safety advocates, with their high speed limits and lack of pedestrian crossings making them dangerous for both motorists and pedestrians. According to the Malta Road Safety Council, there were 119 road fatalities in Malta between 2015 and 2019, with many involving motorcyclists.

In light of this latest incident, the Malta Road Safety Council has renewed its call for urgent action to improve road safety. “We need to see real commitment from the authorities to address the underlying issues that are leading to these crashes,” said a spokesperson for the council.

Hot Malta has reached out to the Ministry for Infrastructure, Sustainable Development, and Planning for comment on the incident and the wider issue of road safety on Malta’s Regional Roads. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
