Pembroke Residents Vow to Fight Football Club’s Expansion Plans
Residents of Pembroke Square Up Against Football Club’s Expansion Plans
In the quiet, tree-lined streets of Pembroke, a usually peaceful suburb of Malta, tension is brewing. Residents have been galvanized into action, their once-quiet evenings now filled with impassioned discussions and planning meetings. The reason? A proposed expansion plan by local football club, Pembroke Athleta, that has left many feeling sidelined and frustrated.
The Proposed Expansion: A New Stadium and More
Pembroke Athleta, currently playing in the Maltese Premier League, has ambitious plans to expand its facilities. The club has submitted a permit application to build a new stadium, along with additional training pitches and a clubhouse, right in the heart of Pembroke, at the site of the current Sirens Stadium.
The plans, if approved, would see the green space transformed into a state-of-the-art football facility. However, it’s the scale of the project and its potential impact on the local community that has residents up in arms.
Residents’ Concerns: Noise, Traffic, and Loss of Green Space
At the top of residents’ concerns is the issue of noise pollution. With the new stadium set to host matches and training sessions, many fear their once-quiet neighborhood will be transformed into a bustling sports hub, with late-night matches and constant training sessions.
Traffic congestion is another major worry. The narrow streets of Pembroke were not designed to accommodate the influx of vehicles that a new stadium would bring. Residents fear that the already busy streets will become gridlocked, with parking spaces at a premium.
Then there’s the loss of green space. Pembroke is one of the few areas in Malta that still boasts expansive green spaces. The proposed development would see a significant chunk of this green lung paved over, much to the dismay of environmentalists and residents alike.
“We love football, we really do,” says Maria Zammit, a long-time Pembroke resident. “But not at the expense of our quality of life. We’ve already lost so much green space to development. We can’t let this happen.”
The Fightback: Residents United
Residents have formed a committee, ‘Pembroke United’, to fight the proposed development. They’ve been busy distributing flyers, organizing meetings, and even setting up a petition that has already gathered thousands of signatures.
They’ve also been reaching out to local politicians, environmental groups, and even the football club itself, hoping to find a solution that works for everyone. “We’re not against progress,” says Zammit. “We just want to ensure that any development is sustainable and respects the character of our community.”
Pembroke United has also engaged a legal team to review the permit application and explore all possible avenues to challenge the plans if necessary.
The Club’s Perspective: Growth and Opportunity
Pembroke Athleta, for its part, maintains that the proposed development is necessary for the club’s growth and success. The club argues that the new facilities will not only benefit the club but also the wider community, providing a state-of-the-art sports facility for local use.
“We understand and respect the concerns of our neighbors,” says club president, Carmel Baldacchino. “But we hope they can see that this is a positive step forward for everyone. We’re committed to working with the community to ensure that any concerns are addressed.”
Baldacchino also points out that the club has engaged with architects and planners to ensure that the new stadium is designed with the community in mind, with noise mitigation measures and traffic management plans in place.
The Battle Ahead: A David and Goliath Story?
As the battle lines are drawn, it’s clear that this is more than just a dispute over a piece of land. It’s a clash of visions, a struggle between the desire for progress and the need to preserve what makes a community unique.
With the permit application still under review, the future of the Sirens Stadium site remains uncertain. But one thing is clear: the residents of Pembroke are not going down without a fight.
“We will fight this obscenity,” says Zammit, her voice filled with determination. “We will fight for our community, for our green spaces, and for our quality of life.”
