UK Police to Probe Prince Andrew Misconduct Claim

UK Police Braced for Prince Andrew Misconduct Probe

As the sun set over the historic streets of Valletta, Malta’s capital, the news from across the pond the usually quiet diplomatic circles. The UK’s Metropolitan Police has confirmed it is preparing to investigate a sexual misconduct allegation against Prince Andrew, the Duke of York.

For Malta, this isn’t just a distant royal drama. The island nation, a former British colony, has long maintained close ties with the UK. The British High Commission in Valletta is a constant reminder of this bond, its grand building standing tall on the bustling Republic Street.

The Allegation and the Prince’s Denial

The allegation, made by Virginia Giuffre, claims that Prince Andrew had sex with her when she was 17 and a victim of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The prince has consistently denied the allegations, stating that he has “no recollection” of ever meeting Ms. Giuffre.

Ms. Giuffre, now 38, has been vocal about her claims, recently telling BBC Panorama, “I am calling for Prince Andrew to come clean about what he knew and when.” Her allegations have gained renewed attention following Epstein’s death in a New York prison last year.

Met Police’s Preparation

The Metropolitan Police, in a statement, said they were “assessing” a formal complaint made by Ms. Giuffre’s lawyer. They stressed that they would not provide an update until a decision had been made on whether to launch a full investigation.

This isn’t the first time the Met has been drawn into the Epstein scandal. They are already under scrutiny for their handling of a 2001 complaint against Epstein, which was dropped without charges.

Malta’s Role in the Epstein Saga

Malta, with its strategic location in the Mediterranean, has found itself entangled in the Epstein saga. The convicted sex offender owned a mansion on the island, known locally as ‘Villa Balbianello.’ Epstein’s former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, is also believed to have spent time on the island.

In 2019, Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, known for her investigative reporting, alleged that Epstein had visited Malta multiple times. Her claims were later corroborated by flight logs.

Malta’s Prime Minister, Robert Abela, has since ordered an investigation into any potential links between Epstein and Maltese officials. The results of this investigation are still awaited.

As the sun rises over the Grand Harbour in Valletta, the investigation into Prince Andrew’s alleged misconduct promises to bring another day of intrigue and scrutiny. The diplomatic community in Malta, and indeed the world, watches and waits.
