Żabbar Council Saves Hompesch Theatre from Demolition
Żabbar’s Cultural Coup: Saving Hompesch Theatre from the Developer’s Gaze
Imagine strolling down Triq San Pawl in Żabbar, the scent of fresh bread from the nearby bakery wafting through the air. You turn a corner, and instead of the usual bustling street, you find a massive construction site. The Hompesch Theatre, Żabbar’s cultural gem, is no more, replaced by an anonymous block of flats. This was the grim reality Żabbar’s local council wanted to prevent, and they’ve just pulled off a major coup to save the historic theatre.
From Potential Demolition to Council Ownership
The Hompesch Theatre, a 19th-century gem tucked away in Żabbar’s heart, was facing an uncertain future. Its owners had plans to demolish it, replacing it with residential units. The news through Żabbar’s community, sparking outrage and concern. But Żabbar’s local council had other plans. In a swift and decisive move, they stepped in, purchasing the theatre for €500,000.
“We couldn’t stand by and watch our cultural heritage be bulldozed,” said Żabbar’s mayor, Elton Attard. “The Hompesch Theatre is more than just a building. It’s a piece of Żabbar’s history, a place where generations of locals have shared laughter, tears, and applause.”
Reviving Żabbar’s Cultural Heart
The council’s purchase is just the first step in their ambitious plan to revive the Hompesch Theatre. They envision it as a cultural hub, a place where Żabbar’s rich history and vibrant arts scene can thrive. The theatre, which has been closed for over a decade, will undergo extensive renovations to restore it to its former glory.
“We want the Hompesch Theatre to be a place for everyone,” said councilmember and cultural enthusiast, Maria Grech. “We’re thinking of hosting everything from traditional Maltese plays to contemporary art exhibitions, music concerts, and even community events.”
Community Support and Future Plans
The council’s move has been met with overwhelming support from Żabbar’s residents. Local businesses have also pledged their support, with many offering to contribute to the renovations. The council has set up a fund, ‘Revive Hompesch’, to accept donations from the public.
, the council is also exploring partnerships with local arts organisations and educational institutions. They’re eager to involve Żabbar’s youth in the theatre’s revival, offering them opportunities to learn about the arts and gain practical experience.
“We want the Hompesch Theatre to be a place where Żabbar’s story is told, where its people can come together, and where its future can be shaped,” said Mayor Attard. “This is just the beginning. We have a lot of work ahead, but we’re excited about the future of Żabbar’s cultural heart.”
