Man Plunges Three Storeys in Gżira: A Balcony Mishap

In the quiet residential area of Triq San Pawl in Gżira, a man’s early morning routine took a dramatic turn on Tuesday. Around 7:30 AM, emergency services received a call that sent them racing to a three-storey apartment block. A man had fallen from his third-floor balcony, plunging three storeys down to the concrete below.

The Fall and the Rescue

The man, a 45-year-old local resident, was found lying on the ground, injured but conscious. Neighbours who witnessed the fall rushed to his aid, providing what support they could until the emergency services arrived. The Gżira Fire Department, along with an ambulance crew from the Malta Civil Protection Department, were on the scene within minutes. They stabilised the man’s injuries and transported him to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment.

Dr. Matthew Pace, a spokesperson for the Malta Civil Protection Department, praised the quick response of the emergency services and the neighbours who assisted. “Their swift action ensured the man received the care he needed as quickly as possible,” he said.

Investigating the Cause

The exact circumstances surrounding the fall are still under investigation by the police. Initial reports suggest it may have been an accident, possibly involving a misstep while leaning over the balcony. However, all possibilities are being explored, including the possibility of foul play.

Sergeant Joe Magro of the Gżira Police Station reminded residents, “Always be cautious when using balconies. Keep them clear of obstacles, and never lean over the edge.”

The Aftermath

The man’s family has been informed and is by his side at Mater Dei. His condition is stable, but he remains under observation. The incident has shaken the close-knit community of Gżira, with many expressing their hope for a speedy recovery.

Triq San Pawl was closed off for several hours while investigations took place, causing some traffic disruption. Residents and commuters were advised to use alternative routes.
