ADPD Battles Govt Over Mellieħa Land Transfer
ADPD’s Land Grab: Mellieħa’s Green Lung Under Threat
Picture this: The sun dipping low over the rugged cliffs of Mellieħa, casting a golden glow over the lush greenery that stretches out towards the sea. This idyllic scene, a haven for locals and tourists alike, is now under threat. The Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) has sounded the alarm, calling on the government to reverse its decision to transfer a chunk of this green lung to the Ministry of Gozo.
From Farmland to Ministry: The Proposed Transfer
The proposed transfer involves a 15-hectare plot of land in Mellieħa, currently used for farming and recreational purposes. The government’s plan is to hand it over to the Ministry of Gozo, which has its eyes on developing a ‘sustainable agricultural hub’. However, ADPD isn’t buying it. They argue that the land is already being used sustainably, supporting local farmers and providing a much-needed green space for the community.
“This land is a lifeline for local farmers,” says Carmel Cacopardo, ADPD’s spokesperson on agriculture. “It’s also a vital lung for Mellieħa, providing a green buffer between the town and the concrete jungle of the north.”
ADPD’s Fight for Mellieħa’s Greens
ADPD isn’t just crying wolf. They’ve done their homework. They’ve crunched the numbers, talked to the farmers, and even conducted a public survey. The results are clear: the majority of Mellieħa residents want the land to stay as it is.
“We’re not against development,” says Cacopardo. “But we believe in sustainable development that respects the environment and the community. This transfer does neither.”
ADPD has called on the government to reconsider its decision, urging it to instead invest in the existing agricultural infrastructure and support local farmers. They’ve also threatened legal action if necessary.
What’s Next for Mellieħa’s Greens?
The ball is now in the government’s court. Will they listen to the cries of ADPD and the Mellieħa community, or will they press ahead with their plans? . But one thing’s for sure: the fight for Mellieħa’s green lung is far from over.
“We won’t give up without a fight,” says Cacopardo. “This land is too precious to lose.”
