Candidate Spends Campaign Funds on Public Defibrillator

Candidate’s Heartfelt Gesture: Defibrillator Over Flyers

Imagine this: instead of the usual campaign flyers littering Malta’s streets, a candidate’s posters are replaced by a life-saving device. This is exactly what happened in the small town of Żebbuġ, where local council candidate, Mark Attard, decided to spend his campaign funds on a public defibrillator instead of the traditional election materials.

Why a Defibrillator?

Mark, a local businessman and father of two, explained his unique decision, “I wanted to do something meaningful for my community. I thought, what better way to make a difference than to save lives?” He continued, “I’ve seen too many cases where quick access to a defibrillator could have made all the difference.”

Mark’s initiative was inspired by the sudden cardiac arrest of a Żebbuġ resident last year. The victim’s life was saved thanks to a nearby defibrillator, but the incident highlighted the need for more of these life-saving devices in the community.

Community Response

The defibrillator was installed at Żebbuġ’s main square, a bustling hub where locals and tourists alike gather. The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. “It’s not just about the election,” said Żebbuġ resident, Maria Azzopardi, “It’s about Mark’s heart for our community. This defibrillator could save someone’s life, and that’s more important than any political promise.”

Mark’s rival candidates have also praised his gesture. “It’s refreshing to see someone prioritize the community’s well-being over political gain,” said Joseph Borg, another council candidate.

Defib Malta’s Role

Mark collaborated with Defib Malta, a local charity dedicated to increasing public access to defibrillators. “Mark’s initiative is exactly what we need more of,” said Dr. Michael Fenech, Defib Malta’s founder. “Every second counts in a cardiac arrest, and having more defibrillators in public places can significantly improve survival rates.”

Defib Malta has since pledged to support similar initiatives across Malta, encouraging other candidates and community leaders to follow Mark’s example.

Mark’s campaign may have started with an unconventional move, but it’s clear that his heart is in the right place. As election day approaches, it’s not just about who wins, but also about who makes a real difference in the community.

When asked about his unique campaign, Mark smiled and said, “I’m not running for a title, I’m running to make a difference. And if that means spending my campaign funds on a defibrillator instead of flyers, then so be it.”
