Msida’s Pedestrian Bridge: A Divide Amongst Neighbours
Imagine strolling along the bustling Msida promenade, the gentle lapping of the sea against the shore, and suddenly, your view is obstructed by a towering, steel structure. This is not a dystopian vision, but a reality that has been unfolding in the heart of Msida. The recently constructed pedestrian bridge, meant to connect the two sides of the town, has found itself at the centre of a legal battle, dividing the community.
From Unity to Division
The bridge, a brainchild of the local council, was intended to foster unity and ease the daily commute of Msida residents. It spans over 100 metres, providing a safe and scenic route across the Marina. However, not everyone is thrilled with this new addition. A group of residents, led by the Msida Residents’ Association, have taken the local council to court, arguing that the bridge was constructed without the necessary permits.
“We’re not against progress,” says Mario, a long-time Msida resident and one of the plaintiffs. “But we believe that this bridge was built without considering the impact it would have on our community. It’s blocking our view, and we fear it will decrease our property values.”
Permits and Protests
The residents’ association claims that the bridge was constructed without the required Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and a Development Permit. The local council, however, maintains that all necessary procedures were followed.
“We understand the residents’ concerns,” says Councilor Joe, who wishes to remain anonymous. “But we believe that this bridge is a step forward for Msida. It’s not just a bridge; it’s a symbol of unity and progress.”
The dispute has led to a series of protests and counter-protests, with residents on both sides of the argument voicing their opinions. The bridge, once a symbol of progress, now stands as a physical manifestation of the divide within the community.
