Għajnsielem’s Red and White Spectacle: The Feast of St Anthony of Padua

Every June, the quiet village of Għajnsielem in Gozo transforms into a vibrant sea of red and white. The reason? The annual Feast of St Anthony of Padua, a celebration that’s as much about faith as it is about community, tradition, and a whole lot of fun. But what makes this feast truly unique is the way it brings the entire village together, from the youngest child to the oldest resident.

St Anthony: A Village Patron with a Rich History

St Anthony of Padua is the patron saint of Għajnsielem, and his feast is celebrated with great fervour. The story goes that the villagers, facing a severe drought in the 15th century, promised to build a church in his honour if he would bring rain. Their prayers were answered, and true to their word, they constructed the Church of St Anthony in 1492. Today, that church stands proudly at the heart of the village, a testament to the power of faith and community.

Preparations: A Labour of Love

Months before the feast, preparations begin in earnest. The festa komitati (feast committees) work tirelessly to ensure everything is ready. They clean and decorate the streets, prepare the church, and organise the various events that will take place. The highlight, however, is the creation of the altare (altar) – a stunning, towering structure adorned with flowers, candles, and religious symbols. This year’s altar, as always, promises to be a sight to behold, standing tall on the main street, Triq San Ġorġ.

But the preparations aren’t just about the committees. Every villager plays a part. Windows and balconies are cleaned and decorated, red and white bunting is hung, and homes are filled with the scent of fresh bread and traditional Gozitan sweets like qagħaq tal-appostli and imqaret. The entire village becomes a living, breathing celebration.

The Big Day: Faith, Food, and Festivities

The feast itself is a day-long affair that kicks off with a mass at the Church of St Anthony. The church is filled to capacity, with villagers and visitors alike coming to pay their respects to the patron saint. After mass, the statue tal-Sant (statue of the saint) is carried through the streets in a colourful procession, accompanied by the village band and a sea of red and white umbrellas.

But the feast isn’t just about religion. It’s also about food, and Għajnsielem doesn’t disappoint. Stalls line the streets, selling everything from traditional Gozitan dishes like ftira and raħal to sweet treats and cold drinks. The aroma of grilled food wafts through the air, making it impossible to resist a bite (or two).

As the sun sets, the focus shifts to the altare. The candles are lit, casting a warm, inviting glow over the entire scene. The band takes to the stage, and the streets fill with dancers, young and old, performing traditional Gozitan folk dances. It’s a sight to behold, a testament to the power of community and tradition.

: A Feast for the Future

The Feast of St Anthony of Padua in Għajnsielem is more than just a religious celebration. It’s a living, breathing example of what makes Malta and Gozo so special – the sense of community, the love of tradition, and the joy of coming together. As we look ahead to this year’s feast, we can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. After all, in Għajnsielem, the feast isn’t just a day. It’s a way of life.
