Unlocking Wellness: Free Hydrotherapy for Disability Card Holders in Malta

Imagine the soothing sensation of warm water enveloping your body, easing away tension and pain. Now, picture this experience being freely accessible to those who need it most. This is not a dream, but a reality thanks to Malta’s recent initiative to offer free hydrotherapy sessions to disability card holders.

A Warm Welcome to Wellness

Tucked away in the heart of Msida, the National Pool Complex has long been a hub for aquatic activities. But now, it’s set to become a beacon of wellness for Malta’s disability community. The complex, managed by the Malta Sports Council, has opened its doors to hydrotherapy sessions, free of charge, for those holding a disability card.

“We believe that everyone deserves the chance to enjoy the benefits of hydrotherapy,” says Mark Cutajar, Director of the Malta Sports Council. “By offering these sessions for free, we hope to make a real difference in the lives of those who need it.”

What is Hydrotherapy and How Does it Help?

Hydrotherapy, or water therapy, is a treatment method that uses water to soothe, stimulate, or heal. It’s particularly beneficial for those with mobility issues, chronic pain, or neurological conditions. The buoyancy of water reduces the impact on joints, allowing for a wider range of movement with less pain. It also promotes relaxation and stress relief.

“Hydrotherapy has been a breakthrough for many of my clients,” says Dr. Maria Camilleri, a local physiotherapist. “The warmth and buoyancy of the water can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall well-being.”

Making a Splash in Malta’s Disability Community

Malta’s disability community has welcomed this initiative with open arms. “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to improve our health and well-being,” says Joe Borg, a disability rights activist. “We’re grateful to the Malta Sports Council for making this possible.”

Sessions are led by qualified physiotherapists who work closely with participants to create personalized exercise plans. The National Pool Complex has also made adjustments to ensure accessibility, including ramps and hoists to assist with getting in and out of the pool.

“We want to ensure that everyone can access these sessions, regardless of their mobility level,” says Cutajar. “We’re constantly reviewing and improving our facilities to meet the needs of our community.”
