Malta’s Animal First Aid Initiative: A Lifesaver for Pets
Local Councils Urged to Act: Animal First Aid Courses on the Horizon
Imagine this: a cat stuck in a tree, a dog choking on a bone, or a distressed horse tangled in its reins. These are scenes that could play out in our communities at any moment. Now, local councils are being called upon to ensure that help is never far away. The Animal Welfare Department has issued an invitation to all local councils to register their interest in hosting animal first aid courses.
Why the Need for Animal First Aid Courses?
Malta, with its high density of pet ownership, is a place where animal welfare is a pressing concern. According to a recent study by the University of Malta, around 70% of Maltese households own a pet. Yet, despite our love for animals, many of us are ill-equipped to handle emergencies. This is where animal first aid comes in. It’s not just about saving lives; it’s about empowering our communities to care for the animals we share our spaces with.
“We’ve seen too many instances where quick action could have saved an animal’s life,” says Dr. Maria Attard, Veterinary Officer at the Animal Welfare Department. “These courses will teach people how to act swiftly and effectively in an emergency.”
What Will the Courses Cover?
The animal first aid courses will cover a range of topics, from basic life support to wound care and CPR. Participants will learn how to handle common emergencies, from choking to heatstroke. The courses will be tailored to suit the needs of each locality, with a focus on the types of animals most commonly found in the area.
“We want to make sure that everyone feels confident and capable of acting in an emergency,” says Dr. Attard. “That’s why we’re encouraging councils to register their interest. The more people we can train, the better equipped our communities will be to handle animal emergencies.”
Councils are being invited to register their interest by contacting the Animal Welfare Department. Once the interest is registered, the department will work with the council to schedule a course that suits their community’s needs.
Getting Involved: A Call to Action
This is an opportunity for local councils to show their commitment to animal welfare. It’s a chance to empower your community to care for the animals that share our spaces. So, if you’re a local councillor, we urge you to register your interest. Together, we can make Malta a safer place for our furry, feathered, and scaled friends.
And if you’re a resident, this is your chance to make a difference too. Encourage your local council to host a course. Learn the skills you need to act swiftly and effectively in an emergency. Because every second counts when it comes to saving a life.
