Motorcyclist Injured in Regional Road Crash: What We Know So Far

Emergency services rushed to the Regional Road in Msida yesterday afternoon following a collision involving a motorcycle and a car. The motorcyclist, a 32-year-old man, was left with serious injuries and transported to Mater Dei Hospital. The incident, which occurred near the Msida roundabout, caused significant traffic delays during the peak afternoon hours.

What Happened?

The collision took place around 3:30 PM, with eyewitnesses reporting that the motorcycle was traveling towards Gzira when it was involved in a collision with a car turning left from the Msida direction. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and landed on the road, sustaining serious injuries.

Police and an ambulance from the Malta Red Cross arrived on the scene shortly after the incident. The motorcyclist was treated at the scene before being taken to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment. The driver of the car, a 45-year-old man, was uninjured and is assisting police with their investigations.

Traffic Chaos and Local Impact

The incident caused significant traffic chaos in the area, with traffic backing up along Regional Road and onto the Msida bypass. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes, with some commuters reporting delays of up to an hour. Local businesses also felt the impact, with some reporting a drop in footfall due to the traffic congestion.

This is not the first time that the Msida roundabout has been the scene of a serious collision. Local residents and businesses have long called for improvements to the roundabout, citing its design as a major cause of traffic congestion and accidents. In 2019, a petition was launched calling for the roundabout to be replaced with traffic lights, but no action has been taken as yet.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Police have appealed for any witnesses to the collision to come forward. They are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Roads Policing Unit on 21320202.

In a statement, the police said, “We urge road users to exercise caution and patience, especially in busy areas. We must all do our part to ensure the safety of all road users.”

This latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by motorcyclists on Malta’s roads. According to the Malta Police, there were 109 motorcycle accidents in 2020, resulting in 18 serious injuries and two fatalities. Motorcyclists are urged to wear protective clothing and helmets, and to ride defensively at all times.

As investigations into the Msida collision continue, one thing is clear: more needs to be done to improve road safety in Malta. With the summer season approaching and more motorcyclists taking to the roads, it is crucial that all road users prioritize safety and respect each other.

We wish the injured motorcyclist a speedy recovery and urge anyone with information about the incident to contact the police.
