Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Regional Road Crash

Emergency services rushed to the Regional Road in Msida this morning after a motorcyclist collided with a car, leaving the rider with serious injuries. The incident, which occurred near the Msida Church roundabout, caused significant traffic delays during the morning rush hour.

Collision Details

The collision happened around 8:30 AM when a 27-year-old man, riding a Yamaha motorcycle, collided with a Toyota Yaris. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and sustained serious injuries to his legs and head. He was immediately attended to by paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department and was later transferred to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the Toyota, a 42-year-old woman, was uninjured but was left shaken by the incident. Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Traffic Chaos

The collision caused significant traffic chaos in the area, with the Regional Road being one of the main thoroughfares connecting Msida to other parts of Malta. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes, with traffic backing up as far as the Msida Bridge and the Triq il-Kbira junction.

Traffic wardens were quickly deployed to the scene to direct traffic and help alleviate the congestion. The road was fully reopened around 10:30 AM, but delays persisted for some time afterwards.

Safety Concerns

This latest incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of motorcyclists on Malta’s roads. According to the Malta Police, there have been over 100 motorcycle-related accidents so far this year, with many resulting in serious injuries or fatalities.

Motorcyclists’ rights group, Malta Bikers’ Association, has called for improved road safety measures, including better driver training and stricter enforcement of traffic laws. They also urge motorcyclists to wear protective gear and follow all traffic rules.

“We need to see a concerted effort from all parties to improve road safety,” said a spokesperson for the association. “Motorcyclists are some of the most vulnerable road users, and we need to do everything we can to protect them.”
