Xewkija Park-and-Ride: Heavy Vehicles Stir Debate

Temporary or Not? Heavy Vehicles Stir Xewkija Park-and-Ride Debate

XEWKIJA, Malta – Picture this: you’re waiting for the bus at Xewkija’s park-and-ride, a service meant to ease traffic congestion. Suddenly, a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) rumbles into the bay, dwarfing the cars around it. This isn’t an isolated incident; residents and commuters have been reporting an increase in HGVs using the facility, sparking a local debate about its intended purpose.

Ministry’s Stance: Temporary Use

The Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure has weighed in, stating that HGVs are using the park-and-ride “temporarily” due to high demand and limited space at the nearby Marsaxlokk Industrial Estate. The ministry assures that this is not the intended use of the facility, designed for cars and public transport users.

“We understand the concerns of the residents and commuters,” a ministry spokesperson told Hot Malta. “We’re working on a long-term solution, but in the meantime, we ask for patience and understanding.”

Residents: Not So Patient

Residents like Maria, a long-time Xewkija resident, aren’t buying the temporary excuse. “I’ve seen HGVs here for months now,” she says, “It’s not just a few times; it’s every day. This isn’t what the park-and-ride was meant for.”

Maria’s concerns are echoed by others. They worry about safety – HGVs sharing the space with smaller vehicles and pedestrians – and the environmental impact, with more vehicles idling while waiting for their drivers.

Call for Action

Xewkija Local Council has called for a meeting with the ministry to discuss the issue. “We need clarity on this,” says the council’s chairperson, “Our residents deserve to know what’s happening in their community.”

The council has also urged residents to report HGV sightings at the park-and-ride, aiming to build a case for stricter enforcement of the rules.

As for the ministry, they promise to keep the lines of communication open. “We’re listening to the residents,” the spokesperson says, “We’ll do our best to find a solution that works for everyone.”
