Alex Borg Joins European Elite at EPP Summit
In the heart of Brussels, under the grand chandeliers of the Residence Palace, a familiar face from Malta was among the European elite. Alex Borg, the Nationalist Party’s MEP, joined his counterparts at the European People’s Party (EPP) summit, a gathering that set the stage for the bloc’s future. But what did this mean for Malta, and what could we expect from our local representative in the corridors of power?
Borg Amongst the Titans
The EPP summit, a biennial event, brought together the party’s heavyweights, including Manfred Weber, the EPP’s leader, and Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council. Borg, a seasoned politician with a decade of experience in European politics, held his own amidst these giants. He was one of only two Maltese representatives at the summit, the other being Miriam Dalli, an MEP from the Labour Party.
Local Issues on the Global Stage
Borg didn’t just attend the summit; he made his presence felt. He was part of the working group discussing the future of Europe, a topic that will shape the continent’s direction for years to come. But what did he bring to the table from Malta? “I stressed the importance of the EU’s southern neighbourhood policy,” Borg told Hot Malta. “Malta’s unique geostrategic position makes it a key player in this regard.”
Borg also raised the issue of migration, a hot topic for Malta given its location at the crossroads of the Mediterranean. “I highlighted the need for a fairer burden-sharing mechanism among EU member states,” he said. “Malta cannot continue to bear this weight alone.”
: What’s Next for Borg?
With the summit over, Borg returns to Malta with a clear mandate. He plans to push for more EU funds to support Malta’s green transition and digital transformation. He also aims to strengthen ties between Malta and its European partners, ensuring our voice is heard in the corridors of power.
“I’m proud to represent Malta in Brussels,” Borg said. “I’ll continue to work tirelessly to ensure our interests are protected and promoted at the highest levels.”
