USA and Australia Set Sights on World Cup Knockouts as Brazil Takes Centre Stage

Malta’s football fans, huddled in their living rooms or cheering from their favourite St. Julian’s pubs, have been treated to a feast of football action as the FIFA World Cup unfolds in Qatar. Among the standout performances, the USA and Australia have been making waves, while Brazil prepares for its crucial clash against Cameroon.

USA: From Underachievers to Contenders

The American team, led by coach Gregg Berhalter, has been a revelation in this World Cup. After a shaky start, they’ve found their stride, beating Iran 1-0 in their final group match to top their group. This is the first time since 2010 that the USA has achieved this feat. Back home, the streets of New York and Los Angeles have been filled with a renewed sense of pride and excitement for their national team.

Malta-based American expats have been buzzing with each US goal. “It’s been amazing to see the team grow throughout the tournament,” says New York native, John Doe, who’s been cheering with fellow expats at the George Square Bar in Paceville. “We always knew we had the talent, but now we’re seeing it all come together.”

Australia: The Socceroos’ Cinderella Story

Australia, too, has been writing its own fairytale in Qatar. Despite being drawn in a tough group with France, Denmark, and Tunisia, the Socceroos have held their own. Their 1-0 win over Denmark, secured by a stunning goal from Craig Goodwin, was a highlight of the group stage. Back home, celebrations have been pouring out onto the streets of Sydney and Melbourne.

Malta’s Australian community has been equally ecstatic. “We’ve been watching every game together at The Black Pig in Msida,” says Melbourne native, Jane Smith. “The atmosphere has been electric. It’s like we’re all part of something special.”

Brazil: The Samba Kings Prepare for Their Dance

While the USA and Australia look ahead to the knockout rounds, all eyes are on Brazil as they face Cameroon in their final group game. A win for the five-time champions will secure them top spot in their group. The streets of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo have been filled with a sense of anticipation and expectation.

For Malta’s Brazilian community, the World Cup is a time of great pride and unity. “We’ve been cheering together at the Brazil Bar in Valletta,” says Rio native, Carlos Silva. “It’s more than just a game for us. It’s about culture, community, and bringing people together.”
