Fire Guts Derelict Paceville Nightclub
Blaze Engulfs Former Paceville Nightclub
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a fire broke out at the derelict former nightclub, ‘Club 21’, in Paceville, leaving the once-vibrant venue a smoldering shell. The blaze sent plumes of smoke into the night sky, visible from as far away as Sliema, and drew a crowd of onlookers to the usually bustling street.
Firefighters Battle the Blaze
The Malta Fire Service received the call at around 3:30 AM. Upon arrival, they found the building well alight, with flames licking the walls and smoke billowing from the windows. It took over three hours and the efforts of 25 firefighters, using six fire engines and a turntable ladder, to bring the fire under control.
No injuries were reported, but the building, which has stood empty for over a decade, was completely gutted. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Paceville’s Changing Face
Once the epicenter of Malta’s nightlife, Paceville has seen a decline in recent years, with many clubs closing and buildings falling into disrepair. The fire at ‘Club 21’ is a stark reminder of this change, with some locals calling for more action to revitalize the area.
Councilor for Local Government, Mario Fava, told Hot Malta, “This incident underscores the need for swift action to regenerate Paceville. We can’t afford to let these historic buildings fall into further disrepair. We’re working on plans to breathe new life into the area, creating a mix of residential, commercial, and cultural spaces.”
In the meantime, residents and business owners in the area are left to clean up the mess left behind by the fire, with many expressing hope that this incident will serve as a catalyst for positive change in Paceville.
