Paragliding Safety in Malta

Malta’s clear skies and thermals make it an ideal destination for paragliding, attracting enthusiasts from around the world. However, incidents like this serve as a stark reminder of the inherent risks involved in the extreme sport. The Malta Paragliding Club, based in Mgarr, has been advocating for stricter safety measures and better regulation of the sport.

“We’re deeply saddened by this incident,” said a spokesperson for the club. “Our thoughts are with the injured pilot. We urge all paragliders to adhere to safety guidelines and always check weather conditions before taking off.”

Investigation Underway

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. However, initial reports suggest that a sudden change in wind conditions may have contributed to the pilot losing control of his glider. The Malta Civil Aviation Authority has launched an inquiry to determine the factors that led to the incident.

This is the second paragliding incident at Dingli Cliffs in the past year, raising concerns about safety at the popular launch site. The Malta Paragliding Club has called for a review of safety measures at the site, including the possibility of installing a wind sock and improving signage.
