Fire Guts Derelict Paceville Nightclub

Blaze Engulfs Derelict Paceville Nightclub

Smoke billowed into the night sky last evening as a fire broke out at the long-abandoned Club 21 in Paceville, Malta’s bustling nightlife hub. The blaze, which started around 9 pm, sent flames leaping high into the air, visible from nearby streets and even from across the bay in St. Julian’s.

Firefighters Battle the Blaze

The Malta Fire Authority (MFA) swiftly responded, deploying multiple fire engines and a turntable ladder to tackle the inferno. Firefighters battled the blaze for over three hours, eventually managing to extinguish it by around midnight. No injuries were reported, but the building sustained significant damage.

Paceville’s Changing scene

Club 21, once a thriving nightspot, has stood derelict for years, a stark reminder of Paceville’s changing scene. The fire has raised concerns about the safety of other abandoned buildings in the area. Local councillor, Alexei Dingli, told Hot Malta, “This incident highlights the urgent need to address the issue of derelict properties in Paceville. We can’t afford to wait for another incident to happen.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, residents and business owners in the area have expressed fears that it may have been started deliberately. Inspector Mario Buhagiar from the MFA confirmed that they are treating the fire as suspicious and are exploring all possibilities.

Paceville, once Malta’s premier nightlife destination, has seen a decline in recent years, with many clubs and bars closing down. The fire at Club 21 has sparked renewed debate about the future of the area and the need for regeneration. Hot Malta will continue to follow this story as it develops.
