Paraglider Injured in Dramatic Rescue at Dingli Cliffs

In a dramatic turn of events, a paraglider found himself in a harrowing situation yesterday afternoon at the iconic Dingli Cliffs, one of Malta’s most breathtaking yet treacherous spots. The experienced glider, who had launched from the heights of Dingli, suddenly found himself in a precarious position, with his parachute malfunctioning mid-air.

Rescue Operation at Dingli Cliffs

The incident occurred around 3 PM, with eyewitnesses reporting a tense scene unfolding above the rugged cliffs. The paraglider, identified only as Mr. X, was seen struggling to control his parachute, which had failed to open properly. Quick-thinking bystanders immediately alerted the emergency services, with the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) and Civil Protection Department (CPD) springing into action.

Within minutes, an AFM helicopter was airborne, racing to the scene to assist the stranded glider. The helicopter crew, skilled in such rescue operations, managed to reach Mr. X and successfully hoist him aboard, averting what could have been a tragic end to his afternoon adventure.

Paraglider Hospitalised in St. Luke’s

Mr. X was airlifted to St. Luke’s Hospital in Pieta, where he was admitted with injuries sustained during the incident. Although the extent of his injuries is not yet known, sources close to the situation report that he is in a stable condition. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that come with extreme sports, even for experienced practitioners.

Investigations Underway

The Civil Aviation Directorate (CAD) has launched an investigation into the incident, with a focus on the parachute’s malfunction. The CAD has assured the public that safety is their top priority and that they will leave no stone unturned in their quest to determine the cause of the malfunction. In the meantime, paragliding enthusiasts are advised to exercise extreme caution and ensure their equipment is in top condition before taking to the skies.

Dingli Cliffs, standing at 253 meters above sea level, is a popular spot for paragliders due to its strong winds and panoramic views. However, the cliffs’ sheer drops and unpredictable winds make it a challenging and potentially hazardous location. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and caution when engaging in such activities.
