Paraglider Injured in Mid-Air Collision at Dingli Cliffs
Emergency services rushed to the iconic Dingli Cliffs yesterday afternoon after a paraglider was injured in a mid-air incident. The 35-year-old local man, identified as Mario, was attempting a launch from the popular paragliding spot when his glider collided with another, leaving him with serious injuries.
Dramatic Rescue at Dingli
The incident occurred around 3 PM, with eyewitnesses reporting a loud crash followed by a flurry of activity. “It was terrifying,” said Lisa, a British expat who was visiting the cliffs. “One moment they were soaring, and the next, they were tangled in the air and falling.”
Mario’s glider plummeted around 50 meters before he was able to deploy his reserve parachute. He landed hard on the rocky terrain, sustaining injuries to his legs and back. The other paraglider, a 40-year-old experienced pilot, managed to land safely.
Rescue Operation
The Civil Protection Department, Malta Police, and an Air Ambulance from the Armed Forces of Malta were swiftly on the scene. Mario was stabilized and airlifted to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment. His condition is described as stable but serious.
Paragliding enthusiasts in Malta have expressed their concern following the incident. “This is a stark reminder of the risks we take,” said Tony, a seasoned paraglider from Msida. “We need to ensure we’re always vigilant and follow safety protocols.”
Safety Measures and Future of Paragliding
Dingli Cliffs, with its stunning views and reliable thermals, is a mecca for paragliders. However, incidents like these raise questions about safety measures. The Malta Paragliding Club has called for improved signage, better communication among pilots, and perhaps even a dedicated launch area.
For Mario’s friends and fellow paragliders, the focus is on his recovery. “We’re just glad he’s alive,” said his friend, Mark. “We’ll be here to support him every step of the way.”
