Xewkija Rotunda Shines Again for St John’s Feast

As the sun sets over the picturesque village of Xewkija, the gleaming white dome of the Rotunda, Malta’s largest unsupported dome, stands proud. This year, the villagers can celebrate with an extra shine, as the much-anticipated restoration works have been completed just in time for the feast of St John the Baptist.

Reviving a Village Icon

The Rotunda, a symbol of Xewkija, has undergone a significant facelift. The €1.2 million project, funded by the Malta Government and the European Union, has seen the dome’s exterior and interior restored to their former glory. The works, carried out by local firm F. Xerri Constructs, included the replacement of damaged stones, the cleaning of the dome’s surface, and the restoration of the intricate frescoes inside.

From Ruins to Radiance

Built in the 17th century, the Rotunda has weathered many a storm, both literally and metaphorically. In recent years, the dome’s condition had deteriorated, with cracks and crumbling stones threatening its structural integrity. The restoration project, which began in 2019, has not only saved the Rotunda from further decay but has also revealed its original beauty.

Walking around the Rotunda today, one can’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship that went into its construction. The dome’s exterior, with its smooth, white stone surface, reflects the Maltese sun, while the interior is a riot of colour, thanks to the restored frescoes. The scenes depicted on the walls tell the story of Xewkija and its people, providing a fascinating glimpse into the village’s past.

Celebrating a Village Treasure

The feast of St John the Baptist, held annually on the 24th of June, is Xewkija’s biggest event. This year, the celebrations will be even more special, with the villagers able to appreciate their restored Rotunda in all its glory. The feast, which includes a procession, fireworks, and traditional Maltese food, will attract thousands of visitors from across Malta and beyond.

The Rotunda’s restoration is not just a victory for Xewkija but for Malta as a whole. It is a testament to the power of community spirit and our cultural heritage. As we look to the future, let’s hope that more such projects are undertaken, ensuring that Malta’s rich history is preserved for generations to come.
