Cocaine Cache: €13k Stash Seized in Qrendi

In the quiet, picturesque village of Qrendi, nestled between the ancient temples and the sea, a significant drug bust has left residents shaken. Police, acting on a tip-off, raided a residence in Triq il-Ħamra on Tuesday, uncovering a stash of cocaine worth an estimated €13,000.
The Bust
A 35-year-old woman, a Qrendi resident, was subsequently charged with drug trafficking and possession. The cocaine, weighing 130 grams, was found hidden in her home. Neighbors, who prefer to remain anonymous, described the woman as quiet and unassuming, her arrest coming as a shock to the close-knit community.
Qrendi: A Surprise Hotspot?
Qrendi, known for its rich history and scenic views, is not typically associated with drug trafficking. However, this is not the first time the village has made headlines for the wrong reasons. In 2019, a man was arrested in Qrendi for cultivating cannabis, highlighting that even in Malta’s smallest villages, drug-related crime can occur.
Inspector Joe Borg of the Malta Police Force commented, “We’re seeing a shift in drug trafficking patterns. No longer are we just dealing with urban hotspots. Rural areas like Qrendi are becoming targets due to their perceived lower risk.”
The Impact on Qrendi
Residents of Qrendi are grappling with the reality of the bust. “It’s scary to think it was happening right under our noses,” said one resident. “We’ve always felt safe here, but now… I’m not so sure.” The local council has promised increased patrols and community engagement to reassure residents and deter any further criminal activity.
Malta’s Drug Commissioner, Dr. Ian Dalli, emphasized the importance of community involvement, “If you see something suspicious, say something. Your tip-off could make a real difference in our fight against drug trafficking.”
