Xewkija’s Rotunda Reborn: A Beacon of Hope and Renewal
As the sun sets over the picturesque village of Xewkija, Malta, the gleaming white dome of the Rotunda stands tall, a beacon of triumph after years of meticulous restoration work. Just in time for the annual feast of St John the Baptist, the iconic church has been returned to its former glory, much to the delight of locals and tourists alike.
From Ruins to Renaissance
The Rotunda, officially known as the Church of St John the Baptist, has been a symbol of Xewkija’s resilience and faith for centuries. However, years of neglect and the passage of time had taken their toll, leaving the once magnificent church in a state of disrepair. In 2016, the local parish and the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) joined forces to breathe new life into the historic landmark.
Restoration Challenges and Triumphs
The restoration process was no easy feat. The team faced numerous challenges, from structural issues to the delicate task of preserving the church’s historical and artistic value. The intricate frescoes, dating back to the 17th century, required painstaking attention to detail, with restorers working tirelessly to restore their vibrancy and beauty.
One of the most significant challenges was the restoration of the dome’s outer surface. The team had to meticulously clean the stonework, removing centuries of dirt and grime, and then apply a protective layer to ensure its longevity. The result is a gleaming white dome that stands out against the clear Maltese sky, a testament to the dedication and skill of the restoration team.
Celebrating a New Beginning
The culmination of these efforts was the reopening of the Rotunda in time for the village’s annual feast, a much-anticipated event that draws thousands of visitors each year. The feast, held on the 24th of June, celebrates the birth of St John the Baptist and is marked by a grand procession, fireworks, and traditional Maltese food and music.
This year, the celebrations took on a new significance, with the villagers and tourists alike marveling at the restored church. The Rotunda’s grandeur served as a poignant reminder of the power of community and perseverance, a theme that resonated deeply with the villagers who had worked tirelessly to see the project through.
Father Joseph Vella, the parish priest of Xewkija, expressed his gratitude to the restoration team and the local community. “This is a momentous occasion for our village,” he said. “The Rotunda is more than just a church; it’s a symbol of our history, our faith, and our resilience. We are grateful to everyone who played a part in bringing it back to life.”
As the feast came to a close, the Rotunda stood proud, its gleaming dome a beacon of hope and renewal. The restoration of this historic landmark is not just a victory for Xewkija, but a testament to Malta’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage.
