Xewkija’s Rotunda Shines Again for St John’s Feast

As the sun set over the picturesque village of Xewkija on Sunday, the newly restored Rotunda gleamed, a beacon of triumph for the local community. After months of hard work and dedication, the restoration project was completed just in time for the feast of St John the Baptist.

From Dilapidation to Glory

The Rotunda, a iconic landmark in Xewkija, had fallen into disrepair over the years. Its once vibrant yellow and white facade was faded, and the interior was in desperate need of renovation. But thanks to a €250,000 project funded by the Malta Government’s Heritage Malta, the Rotunda has been given a new lease of life.

What Changed?

The restoration project, carried out by local contractors, involved a thorough cleaning of the exterior, repairs to the dome, and a complete overhaul of the interior. The original marble flooring has been restored, and the walls have been repainted in their original colours. The most striking change, however, is the new lighting system that illuminates the Rotunda at night, making it a stunning sight to behold.

Community Celebration

The feast of St John the Baptist, celebrated annually on the 24th of June, was the perfect occasion to showcase the Rotunda’s new look. The village was adorned with decorations, and the Rotunda served as the backdrop for the traditional fireworks display. “It’s like seeing an old friend in a new light,” said Joe, a lifelong Xewkija resident. “The Rotunda is the heart of our village, and it’s wonderful to see it looking so beautiful again.”

Xewkija’s Mayor, Dr. Maria Aquilina, expressed her gratitude to all those involved in the project. “This restoration is not just about preserving a historic building,” she said. “It’s about preserving our heritage, our culture, and our community’s sense of pride.”
