Paraglider Injured at Dingli Cliffs: A Reminder of the Risks
Emergency services rushed to Dingli Cliffs yesterday afternoon following reports of a paraglider in distress. The experienced pilot, a local resident, was attempting a launch from the popular flying site when a sudden gust of wind sent him crashing into the rugged terrain.
Rescue Operation at Dingli
The Malta Rescue Coordination Centre received the call around 3 PM. A team from the Civil Protection Department’s Rescue Section, along with an Air Wing helicopter, was swiftly deployed to the scene. The injured paraglider was located near the old quarry, a spot well-known to local pilots for its challenging thermals.
Rescuers found the pilot with suspected broken ribs and a head injury. He was stabilized and airlifted to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remains in stable condition. The Malta Paragliding Club, of which the pilot is a member, has expressed their support and wished him a speedy recovery.
Dingli Cliffs: A Double-Edged Sword
Dingli Cliffs, the highest point on the island, offers paragliders unparalleled views and thrilling flights. However, its unique geography also presents unique challenges. Strong winds and unpredictable thermals can catch even the most experienced pilots off guard.
Club members emphasize the importance of safety and weather awareness. “We always advise our pilots to check the weather conditions and never fly alone,” said a club spokesperson. “Yesterday’s incident serves as a reminder of the risks we take, but also the importance of our safety protocols.”
Safety Measures and Future Flights
Following the incident, the club has organized a safety briefing for its members. They will also be reviewing their launch procedures, particularly for high-wind conditions. Despite the setback, the club remains optimistic about future flights.
“We’re not letting this incident dampen our spirits,” the spokesperson added. “We love flying, and we know the risks. We just need to ensure we’re doing everything we can to minimize them.”
