Xewkija Rotunda: A Beacon of Hope Restored
As the sun sets over the picturesque village of Xewkija, the newly restored Rotunda stands proud, its gleaming white dome a beacon of triumph for the local community. After years of painstaking work, the iconic church has been returned to its former glory just in time for the feast of St John the Baptist.
From Dilapidation to Splendor
The story of Xewkija Rotunda’s restoration is one of resilience and dedication. Built in the 19th century, the church had fallen into disrepair over the years, its once magnificent dome marred by cracks and leaks. The turning point came in 2016 when the local council, with the support of the Archdiocese of Malta and the government, launched a €1.5 million restoration project.
Unveiling the Masterpiece
The restoration, carried out by local firm Farsons, was no small feat. It involved meticulous work to repair the dome’s structural integrity, replace damaged stones, and restore the intricate frescoes that adorn the interior. The project also saw the installation of a new lighting system, enhancing the church’s beauty both day and night.
But perhaps the most striking change is the Rotunda’s gleaming white exterior. The dome, once a dull grey, now shines brightly, a testament to the craftsmanship of local stonemasons who painstakingly restored each stone by hand.
A Village United
The restoration of Xewkija Rotunda has been more than just a physical transformation. It has been a journey that has brought the village together. From the council members who championed the project to the volunteers who helped with the fundraising, everyone has played a part in bringing the Rotunda back to life.
“Seeing the Rotunda restored has been emotional,” says Joe, a lifelong Xewkija resident. “It’s more than just a church. It’s a symbol of our village, our history, our identity.”
As the feast of St John the Baptist approaches, the village is abuzz with excitement. The Rotunda, once a symbol of decay, will now serve as a beacon of hope and unity, its gleaming dome a reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together.
