Xewkija Rotunda Restoration Complete for St John Feast

As the sun sets over the picturesque village of Xewkija, the gleaming white dome of the Rotunda stands tall, a beacon of triumph. After years of painstaking work, the restoration of this iconic church is finally complete, just in time for the village’s patron saint feast, St John the Baptist.

From Ruins to Resplendence

The story of the Xewkija Rotunda is one of resilience and dedication. Built in the 18th century, this magnificent church was left in ruins after a devastating earthquake in 1937. It took nearly a century for the villagers to raise the necessary funds and muster the determination to restore their beloved landmark to its former glory.

In 2016, the restoration project began, led by local architect Richard Schranz. The team painstakingly reconstructed the dome, which had collapsed during the earthquake, using traditional techniques and materials. They also restored the intricate frescoes inside the church, revealing the beauty that had been hidden for decades.

A Village United

The restoration of the Xewkija Rotunda was more than just a building project; it was a testament to the power of community spirit. Villagers chipped in with donations, volunteered their time, and even provided accommodation for the workers. The project became a symbol of unity and hope for the people of Xewkija.

Father Joe Borg, the parish priest, recalls the outpouring of support, “It was incredible to see how the community came together. People from all walks of life contributed in their own way. It was more than just a restoration; it was a renewal of our faith and our sense of community.”

Ready for the Feast

The completion of the Xewkija Rotunda is especially significant as it coincides with the village’s annual feast in honour of St John the Baptist. This year’s celebrations, scheduled for the 23rd and 24th of June, will be extra special, with the newly restored church taking centre stage.

The feast, a highlight of Malta’s cultural calendar, will feature a traditional procession, fireworks, and street parties. The restored Rotunda will be the focal point, its gleaming dome a symbol of the village’s triumph over adversity.

Father Joe is looking forward to the feast, “This year, we celebrate not just our patron saint, but also the resilience and unity of our community. The restored Rotunda is a reminder of what we can achieve when we work together.”
