Xewkija’s Rotunda Ready for St John’s Feast After Restoration

In the heart of Xewkija, a town known for its rural charm and close-knit community, the Rotunda’s gleaming dome has been a beacon of pride for generations. This year, as the scent of summer blooms fills the air and the sun beats down on the cobbled streets, the Rotunda’s restoration has been completed just in time for the annual feast of St John the Baptist.

From Ruins to Renovation

The Rotunda, a historic church dedicated to St John the Baptist, has stood tall in Xewkija since 1963. However, time and the elements had taken their toll, leaving the once majestic building in a state of disrepair. In 2018, the Archdiocese of Malta launched a restoration project to breathe new life into this iconic landmark.

Restoration Challenges and Triumphs

The restoration process was no easy feat. The team faced numerous challenges, from preserving the original structure to ensuring the use of authentic materials. The dome, a masterpiece of Maltese architecture, required meticulous care to maintain its unique design. Yet, despite these obstacles, the team persevered, driven by a shared passion for preserving Malta’s cultural heritage.

One of the most striking changes is the restoration of the Rotunda’s interior. The once bare walls are now adorned with vibrant frescoes, depicting scenes from the life of St John the Baptist. These murals, painted by local artist George Preca, add a touch of vibrancy and color to the otherwise serene space.

Celebrating a New Dawn

The completion of the Rotunda’s restoration coincides with the annual feast of St John the Baptist, a much-anticipated event in Xewkija’s calendar. This year’s celebrations, set to take place on the 24th of June, will be extra special, with the community coming together to celebrate not just their patron saint, but also the rebirth of their beloved Rotunda.

For the first time in years, the Rotunda will be open to the public throughout the feast, allowing visitors to marvel at its restored glory. The feast will also include a traditional procession, with a statue of St John the Baptist carried through the streets, accompanied by fireworks and the joyous singing of the local band.

The Rotunda’s restoration is more than just a renovation project; it’s a testament to the power of community and our cultural heritage. As the Rotunda stands tall and proud once more, it serves as a reminder of the rich history that lies at the heart of Malta’s towns and villages.
