Smoke Chokes Victoria as Large Blaze Engulfs Gozo Farm

Residents of Victoria woke up to an eerie orange glow and choking smoke on Tuesday morning as a large fire engulfed a farm on the outskirts of the city. The blaze, which started around 6 am, sent plumes of smoke billowing into the sky, visible from as far as Rabat and Xewkija.

Firefighters Battle the Flames

The Gozo Fire Department swiftly responded, deploying multiple fire engines and around 20 firefighters to the scene. They battled the inferno for hours, with the fire finally under control by late afternoon. No injuries were reported, but the farm’s owners are estimated to have lost thousands of euros worth of crops and equipment.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but initial reports suggest it may have started accidentally in a nearby field, spreading quickly due to strong winds. The farm, located near Triq l-Imqabba, is known for its extensive vegetable and fruit plantations.

Impact on Residents and Businesses

While no evacuations were necessary, the smoke caused some disruption. Schools in the area were temporarily advised to keep children indoors, and some businesses closed their outdoor seating areas due to the smoky conditions. The local council is now assessing any potential long-term environmental impact.

Local resident Maria Azzopardi, who lives near the farm, recounted, “I woke up to this thick smoke, and I couldn’t see more than a few meters ahead. It was quite scary, but I’m relieved the firefighters got it under control so quickly.”

Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri visited the scene and praised the firefighters’ swift response. He assured residents that their safety and the environment are top priorities, and that the government is working to prevent such incidents in the future.
