Malta’s Skills Gap: The Clock is Ticking
Skills Gap: The Clock is Ticking
Imagine this: You’re walking down Republic Street, Malta’s bustling heart, and you notice something unusual. The traditional shops are still there, but the signboards now read ‘Data Analysts Wanted’ and ‘Coding Tutors Needed’. Welcome to the future of employment, where the skills we need are changing faster than the weather in Valletta.
Malta’s Tech Boom: A Double-Edged Sword
Malta’s tech industry is booming. The iGaming sector alone contributes over €1 billion to our GDP. But with great growth comes great responsibility. Our education system and workforce are struggling to keep up with the demand for digital skills. According to a recent survey by the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry, 72% of businesses find it challenging to recruit talent with the right skills.
We’re not alone in this struggle. The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2025, 85 million jobs could be displaced by automation, while 97 million new roles may emerge. The question is, will Malta’s workforce be ready?
Upskilling Today for Tomorrow’s Jobs
So, what can we do? The answer lies in upskilling and reskilling. We need to start preparing today for the jobs of tomorrow. Here are a few initiatives already making waves in Malta:
- eSkills Malta: This public-private partnership aims to increase digital literacy and provide training in high-demand areas like data analysis, digital marketing, and cybersecurity.
- University of Malta’s MSc in Artificial Intelligence: Launched in 2020, this course is designed to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in the AI era.
- Startups and Coding Bootcamps: Local startups and coding bootcamps like Code Malta and TechSpace are providing intensive, hands-on training in web development, software engineering, and more.
But it’s not just about learning new skills. It’s also about fostering a culture of lifelong learning. We need to encourage people to embrace change, to see learning as a continuous journey, not a destination.
