Mqabba Sets New Record with 90m Fireworks Display

Imagine this: a towering column of fire, 90 metres high, painting the night sky over Malta. That’s exactly what fireworks enthusiasts in Mqabba achieved last weekend, claiming a new record for the Maltese Islands.

Mqabba’s Sky-High Spectacle

Mqabba, a small town nestled in the heart of Malta, has long been known for its love of fireworks. But on Saturday, the 25th of June, the town outdid itself. The annual ‘Festa ta’ San Ġuże’ celebrations culminated in a fireworks display that left spectators awestruck and locals beaming with pride.

Organisers of the event, the ‘Società Filarmonica La Stella’, had been teasing the display for weeks, hinting at something ‘never seen before’. And they weren’t exaggerating. The 90-metre high display, set off from a barge in the Marsaxlokk harbour, was a sight to behold, visible from as far as Valletta and the Three Cities.

Breaking Records, Breaking Hearts

According to the organisers, the display used over 500kg of fireworks, with the tallest shell reaching an astonishing 90 metres. If confirmed, this would smash the previous record of 75 metres, set in 2019 during the ‘Festa ta’ Santa Marija’ in Birkirkara.

But it’s not just about the numbers. For many Maltese, fireworks displays are more than just a spectacle. They’re a tradition, a way to celebrate our faith, our culture, and our community. And Mqabba’s display this year was no exception. It was a labour of love, a testament to the dedication and passion of the town’s residents.

: A New Era for Maltese Fireworks?

With Mqabba’s record-breaking display, the bar has been set high for future events. But it’s not just about outdoing each other. It’s about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, about innovation and creativity. It’s about making each display unique, memorable, and true to the spirit of Malta.

As for Mqabba, the town is already looking forward to next year’s ‘Festa ta’ San Ġuże’. And with the bar set so high, you can bet they’re planning something even more spectacular. After all, in Malta, when it comes to fireworks, the sky’s not the limit – it’s just the beginning.
