New Bus Routes Bring Morning Gridlock to Valletta

Traffic Snarls as New Bus Routes Kick In

It’s 7:30 AM on June 21, 2026, and traffic is already building up along Republic Street in Valletta. Today is the day Malta Public Transport (MPT) has been promising – the launch of the new bus routes. But as commuters rub their eyes, bleary from the early start, they’re greeted with a sight that’s all too familiar: gridlock.

What’s Changed?

MPT has been hyping these new routes for months. They promise faster journeys, more frequent buses, and even a new fleet of electric buses. So, what’s the hold-up? Well, it seems the new system has caught some drivers off guard. Routes have changed, and not everyone’s up to speed. Add to that the usual morning rush, and you’ve got a recipe for congestion.

Take the No. 12 bus, for instance. It’s now serving the Three Cities instead of heading straight to Valletta. A good move, perhaps, for residents of Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua. But it’s left some Valletta-bound passengers scratching their heads, wondering where their bus has gone.

Growing Pains

MPT isn’t shying away from the teething problems. “We expected some disruption,” says CEO, Maria Grech. “But we’re working hard to iron out the kinks. We’ve got extra staff on hand to guide passengers and drivers alike.”

Grech is quick to point out the long-term benefits. “These new routes will connect more communities, reduce travel times, and lower our carbon footprint. It’s a win-win.” But for now, it’s a case of patience and understanding.

So, if you’re out and about today, expect some delays. But remember, change takes time. And who knows? By this time tomorrow, Malta’s bus network could be running smoother than ever.
