New Bus Routes Cause Morning Mayhem in Valletta
Traffic Snarls as New Bus Routes Kick In
It’s 7:30 am on Republic Street, and the usually bustling thoroughfare is in chaos. Buses are double-parked, passengers are confused, and drivers are exasperated. Malta Public Transport has just rolled out its latest revamp, and it’s not off to a smooth start. The new routes, aimed at improving efficiency and accessibility, have left many commuters scratching their heads.
What’s Changed?
The most significant change is the rerouting of several bus services through the Three Cities. The new routes, which aim to boost tourism and connect the historic towns, have seen buses like the 1, 2, and 3 now passing through Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua. While the move is welcomed by local councils, many commuters are finding the new routes inconvenient.
Take Malta’s most popular bus route, the 1, for instance. Instead of its usual straight shot from Valletta to the University, it now meanders through the Three Cities, adding nearly 30 minutes to the journey. “I’ve been taking the 1 for years,” says Maria, a regular commuter. “Now, I have to change buses in Birgu just to get to the University on time.”
MPT: Expect Teething Problems
Malta Public Transport has acknowledged the teething problems, attributing them to the sudden change and lack of awareness among commuters. “We expected some initial confusion,” says a spokesperson. “But we’re confident that, with time, commuters will adjust to the new routes and appreciate the improved connectivity.”
The transport authority has also announced plans to introduce real-time bus tracking and enhanced signage to help commuters navigate the new routes. “We’re working on improving the situation,” the spokesperson adds. “We urge commuters to be patient and give the new system a chance.”
In the meantime, commuters are advised to plan their journeys carefully, allowing extra time for their trips. They can also check the updated routes and timetables on the MPT website or the MPT app.
