Opposition Demands Fuel Price Transparency

Malta’s opposition parties are calling for the government to disclose the cost breakdown of BP’s fuel, following recent price hikes that have left locals and businesses reeling. The demand comes as the cost of living continues to rise, with fuel prices reaching record highs at some stations.

Fuel Prices Soar, Consumers Struggle

Residents and businesses across Malta and Gozo have been grappling with soaring fuel prices, with some stations charging over €1.70 per litre for petrol. The price hike has been felt acutely in towns like Birkirkara and Qormi, where many rely on vehicles for work and daily commutes. Local shopkeepers, already hard hit by the pandemic, are now facing increased operating costs, which they fear will be passed on to consumers.

Opposition Calls for Transparency

The Nationalist Party (PN) and the Democratic Party (PD) have jointly called on the government to reveal the cost breakdown of BP’s fuel. They argue that such transparency would help consumers understand why prices have risen so sharply and what can be done to mitigate the impact. The parties have also urged the government to consider measures to ease the burden on consumers, such as reducing taxes on fuel.

“The government must come clean on the cost breakdown of BP’s fuel,” said PN MP Simon Busuttil. “Malta’s families and businesses deserve to know why they’re being hit with these astronomical prices.” PD leader Godfrey Farrugia echoed this sentiment, stating, “Transparency is the first step towards finding a solution. We need to know what’s driving these price hikes before we can address them.”

BP Malta has not yet responded to requests for comment. Meanwhile, the government has maintained that it is monitoring the situation but has not committed to revealing the cost breakdown.
