Malta’s Green Revolution: Eco-City & EV Charging Boost

Malta’s Green Revolution: New Eco-City and EV Charging Boost

Imagine this: Malta, the tiny Mediterranean island, is set to become even greener. On a sunny June morning, as the scent of jasmine filled the air around the historic St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, Malta’s Prime Minister made two announcements that sent ripples of excitement through the local community and beyond.

An Eco-City Rises in Marsaskala

First off the block was the unveiling of plans for an eco-city in Marsaskala. This coastal town, known for its traditional fishing boats and vibrant seafront, is about to transform into a model of sustainable urban living. The new eco-city, dubbed ‘Marsaskala Verde’, promises to be a carbon-neutral, self-sustaining haven, complete with green buildings, renewable energy sources, and lush public spaces.

Architects and urban planners have been working tirelessly with local residents to ensure the project respects Marsaskala’s unique character. “We’re not just building a city, we’re creating a community,” said one of the project’s lead architects, Malta-born Joseph Xuereb.

Electric Vehicles Get a Boost with New Charging Network

In a move that’s sure to rev up the local electric vehicle (EV) scene, the Prime Minister also announced the rollout of a new nationwide charging network. By 2028, Malta aims to have 1,000 public charging points, making it easier than ever for locals and tourists alike to go electric.

This ambitious project, dubbed ‘Charge Malta’, will see charging points installed in strategic locations across the island, from the bustling streets of Paceville to the scenic roads of Gozo. The initiative is a joint effort between the government, local energy providers, and private sector investors.

“Today’s announcements are a testament to Malta’s commitment to a greener future,” said the Prime Minister. “We’re not just talking about sustainability, we’re building it, charging it, and driving it forward.”
