Metsola Under Fire: Racism Row in EU Parliament Intensifies

Malta’s own Roberta Metsola finds herself in the eye of a storm, as calls for disciplinary action against her intensify following a racism row in the European Parliament. The MEP for the Nationalist Party has been at the centre of a heated debate since she refused to apologise for comparing a Black Belgian MEP to a monkey.

From Social Media to Strasbourg

The controversy began on social media, where Metsola shared a post from a satirical website, which depicted a monkey wearing a hat with the EU flag. The post was aimed at Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella, who had earlier accused Metsola of lying during a parliamentary debate. When challenged about the post, Metsola defended it as a ‘joke’, refusing to apologise.

This incident, which unfolded on the streets of Brussels and social media platforms, has now made its way to the grand halls of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The European Parliament’s Committee on Ethics is now investigating the matter, with some calling for Metsola’s suspension pending the outcome.

Malta Reacts: From Street Talk to Political Statements

Back in Malta, the controversy has sparked heated discussions, from street corners in Valletta to political party headquarters. The Labour Party has been vocal in its condemnation, with MP Jason Azzopardi calling for Metsola’s resignation. Meanwhile, the Nationalist Party has stood by Metsola, with MP David Agius describing the calls for her resignation as ‘hypocritical’.

Civil society groups have also weighed in, with the Nationalist Party’s youth wing, Moviment Zwielu, calling for Metsola to apologise and retract her statement. The Malta Union of Teachers has also expressed its concern, stating that such behaviour is ‘unacceptable’ and sets a poor example for young people.

As the debate rages on, one thing is clear: this controversy has shone a spotlight on the issue of racism and the need for zero tolerance in our political discourse, both locally and on the European stage.
