Seven-storey Block Proposed: San Ġwann’s Skyline Set for Change

Imagine strolling down San Ġwann’s Triq San Girgor, the church’s bell tower looming large, when suddenly, a seven-storey block comes into view. This could soon be a reality, as plans for such a development have been submitted. But what does this mean for the quiet, residential area?

From Quiet Residential to Urban Hub?

Proposed by local developers, the seven-floor block aims to transform a currently vacant plot into an urban hub. The plans, submitted to the Planning Authority, include residential units, commercial spaces, and even a rooftop pool. But not everyone is thrilled about the prospect.

“This is a significant change from the current scene,” says long-time San Ġwann resident, Maria Attard. “We’re used to seeing the church and the open space. A seven-storey block will completely change the feel of the area.”

Balancing Progress and Preservation

On the other hand, some see the development as a sign of progress. “San Ġwann is growing,” says councilor Joe Borg. “We need to balance preserving our heritage with allowing development that benefits the community.” The proposed block, he notes, includes affordable housing units and new commercial spaces that could boost the local economy.

The Planning Authority is set to review the proposal, with public consultation underway. Residents are encouraged to share their views, with many already weighing in on social media. “It’s important for everyone to have their say,” says Borg. “This is our community, and we all have a stake in its future.”
