PN Adviser’s Ġgantija Heights Link Raises Eyebrows
Political Twist: PN Adviser Linked to Ġgantija Heights Project
Standing at the foot of the ancient Ġgantija Temples in Xagħra, one can’t help but marvel at the contrast between the prehistoric giants and the modern-day controversy brewing nearby. The Ġgantija Heights project, a proposed luxury development, has been a hot topic in Maltese politics, with the Nationalist Party (PN) lambasting it as ‘scandalous’. Ironically, a PN political adviser has now been revealed to have ties to the very project they’ve been condemning.
Unravelling the Connection
Documents obtained by Hot Malta show that Dr. Paul Cardona, a PN political adviser and lawyer, is listed as a director of a company, Gozo Developments Ltd, which is one of the entities behind the Ġgantija Heights project. The project, earmarked for a plot of land adjacent to the Ġgantija Temples, has been a source of contention due to environmental concerns and questions about the planning process.
When approached for comment, Dr. Cardona confirmed his involvement but stated that he had recused himself from any PN discussions related to the project. He explained, “I declared my interest to the party leadership from the outset, and I’ve ensured that I’m not involved in any way in the PN’s position on the Ġgantija Heights project.”
PN’s Stance and Public Reaction
The PN has been vocally opposed to the project, with party leader Bernard Grech describing it as “a scandal that threatens our cultural heritage and environment”. The revelation of Dr. Cardona’s involvement has sparked a flurry of reactions, with some questioning the party’s sincerity in its opposition.
In a statement, the PN maintained its stance, “The party’s position on the Ġgantija Heights project remains unchanged. We are committed to protecting Malta’s cultural heritage and environment, and we will continue to oppose this project in all forums.”
Meanwhile, the project’s promoters, led by GSD Marketing Ltd, have declined to comment on the latest developments, stating that they do not wish to engage in a public debate.
