Ħal Għaxaq’s Green Revolution: 25,000 sqm Park Underway
Imagine Ħal Għaxaq, a small town in the heart of Malta, where the scent of orange blossoms often fills the air. Now, picture a 25,000 square metre open space, currently a canvas of overgrown grass and scattered rubble, soon to be transformed into a green lung for the community. This is not a distant dream, but a project underway, set to reshape the town’s skyline and lifestyle.
From Neglect to Renaissance
For years, this vast tract of land, located just off Triq l-Imqades, has been an eyesore, a stark contrast to the traditional Maltese houses that surround it. But change is afoot. The Ħal Għaxaq Local Council, in collaboration with the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA), has embarked on a ambitious project to turn this neglected space into a vibrant public park.
What’s in Store for Ħal Għaxaq?
The plans, designed by leading local architects, promise a green oasis that will serve as a community hub. Here’s a sneak peek into what’s planned:
- Green Spaces: The park will boast expansive green areas, perfect for picnics, leisurely strolls, or simply soaking up the sun.
- Playgrounds: Children will have their own space to play and learn, with age-appropriate equipment and safe surfaces.
- Sports Facilities: Sports enthusiasts can look forward to basketball and football courts, as well as a fitness area.
- Community Hub: A multi-purpose building is planned, which could host community events, workshops, or even a small café.
- Accessibility: The park will be designed with accessibility in mind, ensuring it’s enjoyable for everyone, including those with mobility challenges.
But this project is not just about bricks and mortar. It’s about fostering a sense of community, encouraging outdoor living, and promoting a healthier, greener Ħal Għaxaq.
Making It Happen
The project, with an estimated cost of €1.5 million, is being funded through the Local Government Finance Reform. The Ħal Għaxaq Local Council, led by Mayor Mario Fava, is working tirelessly to ensure the project stays on track and within budget.
“This park is more than just a green space,” Mayor Fava explains. “It’s an investment in our community’s future, a place where people of all ages can come together, stay active, and enjoy nature.”
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2023, transforming the current eyesore into a green jewel that Ħal Għaxaq residents can be proud of.
