England Held by Ghana in World Cup Opener

Ghana’s Black Stars Rain on England’s Parade in World Cup Opener

Malta’s pubs and living rooms echoed with groans and cheers last night as England’s World Cup campaign kicked off with a frustrating 6-6 draw against Ghana. The Three Lions, who had been tipped as favourites, found themselves on the receiving end of a spirited performance from the African side.

Local Fans Split in Loyalty

In the heart of Malta, at the popular football haunt, Tipsy Lion in Paceville, the atmosphere was electric. The pub, known for its British football fan base, was a sea of white and red. Yet, the Ghanaian community in Malta, though smaller, was equally vocal, gathering at the African Vibes restaurant in Msida to cheer on their team.

Malta’s football enthusiasts, many of whom have roots in Africa, found themselves torn. “It’s not easy,” said Joseph, a regular at Tipsy Lion. “I’m Maltese, but my family’s from Ghana. I wanted them to win, but I also wanted to see England do well.”

Ghana’s Spirit Impresses

Ghana, ranked 61st in the world, played with heart and skill, matching England’s intensity. Their equaliser in the 93rd minute, a thunderous strike from Thomas Partey, was met with roars of approval from the African community and a collective groan from the English fans.

“They showed real spirit,” said Michael, a Ghanaian student in Malta. “We might not have the big names, but we’ve got the heart. And that’s what football’s about.”

Back at Tipsy Lion, England fans were left to rue missed chances and a resilient Ghanaian defence. “We should have won that,” said John, a British expat. “But fair play to Ghana. They never gave up.”

England next face the USA, while Ghana take on South Korea. Both matches will be watched with keen interest in Malta. “It’s not over yet,” said Joseph, a smile returning to his face. “There’s still plenty of football to be played.”
