Nadur Basilica’s Pisani Masterpiece Restored

Imagine standing in the heart of Nadur, Malta’s smallest town, gazing up at the intricate ceiling of the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady. For centuries, Lazzaro Pisani’s masterpiece has captivated worshippers and visitors alike, its vibrant colours and intricate details a testament to the Baroque period’s artistic prowess. But time, humidity, and candle soot had taken their toll, dulling the painting’s lustre and threatening its survival. That was, until now.

Reviving a Masterpiece

In a labour of love spanning over two years, a team of local artisans and international experts have painstakingly restored Pisani’s ceiling painting to its former glory. The project, spearheaded by the Heritage Malta, has been a testament to the power of community effort and international collaboration.

Under the watchful eye of project manager and renowned art conservator, Dr. Victor Grech, the team meticulously cleaned, consolidated, and retouched the painting. They removed centuries of grime, repaired damaged sections, and even discovered hidden details previously obscured by time and neglect.

Unveiling Hidden Secrets

As layers of dirt and soot were gently removed, the team made fascinating discoveries. They uncovered a hidden inscription, believed to be the artist’s signature, and revealed previously unseen details in the painting’s composition. The restoration also provided valuable insights into Pisani’s techniques and the materials he used, offering a unique glimpse into the artistic practices of the 17th century.

“It’s like watching a story unfold,” says Dr. Grech, “with each layer we remove, we’re learning more about the artist, the period, and the history of this remarkable piece.”

A Community Effort

The restoration project has been a true labour of love, with local volunteers and experts working side by side with international specialists. The community of Nadur has been deeply involved, with many residents volunteering their time and skills to help preserve their town’s cultural heritage.

“This is more than just a restoration project,” says Joseph Said, a local historian and volunteer. “It’s a testament to what we can achieve when we come together as a community. It’s about preserving our past for future generations.”

The restored ceiling will be officially unveiled later this year, offering visitors to Nadur a unique opportunity to witness the beauty and craftsmanship of Lazzaro Pisani’s work in all its glory.
