Ħal Għaxaq’s 25,000 sqm Green Makeover

In the heart of Ħal Għaxaq, a town known for its rural charm and traditional Maltese houses, a significant transformation is underway. The once-neglected 25,000 square metre open space at Triq San Ġużepp is being rejuvenated, set to become a green oasis and a new community hub.

From Neglect to New Life

For years, this vast expanse of land, located just off the main street, has been an eyesore. Littered with rubble and overgrown with weeds, it was a stark contrast to the neat, well-kept homes surrounding it. But that’s all changing now. Works have begun, and the difference is already visible. Heavy machinery rumbles, clearing the land, while workers buzz around, their hard hats glinting in the Mediterranean sun.

What’s in Store for Ħal Għaxaq?

The plans for the space are ambitious. The local council, in collaboration with the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA), envisions a green lung for the town. The area will be transformed into a public park, complete with walking paths, picnic areas, and even a small lake. There are also plans for a children’s play area and a community garden, where residents can grow their own produce.

But the new park isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s also about community engagement and health. The walking paths will encourage residents to lead more active lifestyles, while the community garden will foster a sense of togetherness. The park will also host events, from traditional Maltese feasts to cultural performances, further cementing Ħal Għaxaq’s reputation as a close-knit community.

Challenges and Timeline

The project isn’t without its challenges. The land is rocky, and there are remnants of old structures that need to be removed. But the team behind the project is undeterred. They’re working tirelessly, with a completion date set for late 2023.

For the residents of Ħal Għaxaq, the transformation can’t come soon enough. “It’s about time we had a proper park here,” says Maria, a local resident who’s been watching the works from her balcony. “I can’t wait to see it all finished. It’s going to be a real asset to our town.”
