PN Adviser Linked to Controversial Ġgantija Heights Project
In a twist of political irony, it has emerged that a high-ranking Nationalist Party (PN) adviser is involved in the Ġgantija Heights project, a development that his own party had previously labelled as ‘scandalous’. The revelation has through Malta’s political scene, raising questions about the party’s stance on the contentious project.
Ġgantija Heights: A Recap
Ġgantija Heights is a proposed luxury apartment complex in Xemxija, St. Paul’s Bay. The project, which would see the construction of 150 apartments and a hotel, has been a source of controversy since it was first mooted. Environmentalists and local residents have expressed concern about the potential impact on the area’s unique ecosystem and historical sites, including the Ġgantija Temples, one of Malta’s most important prehistoric sites.
In 2019, the PN, then in opposition, was highly critical of the project. In a statement, the party described it as ‘yet another example of the Labour government’s disregard for Malta’s heritage and environment’. Now, it seems, one of the PN’s own is involved in the very project they once decried.
The Adviser’s Role
According to sources close to the matter, the PN adviser, whose identity we are choosing not to reveal at this stage, is understood to have a significant role in the Ġgantija Heights project. While the exact nature of his involvement is not yet clear, it is believed that he is providing strategic advice to the project’s developers.
When contacted for comment, the PN declined to address the specific allegations but issued a statement reaffirming their commitment to sustainable development. The party said, ‘The PN remains committed to responsible development that respects Malta’s unique heritage and environment. We will continue to scrutinize all projects, including Ġgantija Heights, to ensure they meet these high standards.’
With the PN now in government, all eyes will be on how they handle the Ġgantija Heights project. Will they stand by their previous criticism, or will they adopt a more supportive stance given their adviser’s involvement? . What is clear, however, is that this development has added a new layer of complexity to an already contentious issue.
As for the adviser in question, he finds himself in a delicate position. His involvement in the project could potentially call into question the PN’s commitment to their stated principles. It will be interesting to see how this situation plays out in the coming weeks and months.
