Ħal Għaxaq’s 25,000 sqm Open Space: A New Green Lung Underway

In the heart of Ħal Għaxaq, a once-neglected expanse of land is undergoing a remarkable transformation. The 25,000 square metre plot, located just off Triq San Girgor, is being reimagined as a sprawling open space, set to become the town’s newest and largest public park.

From Neglect to New Life

For years, this vast area was an eyesore, a dumping ground for rubbish and a haven for illegal activities. But thanks to a joint initiative by Ħal Għaxaq Local Council and the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), the tide is turning. The site is now buzzing with activity, as workers clear debris, prepare the land, and plant trees.

What’s in Store for Ħal Għaxaq?

The planned open space, set to be named ‘Il-Ħaġar Ta’ Ħal Għaxaq’, will be a green lung for the town. It will feature walking paths, picnic areas, a children’s play area, and even a small lake. The project also includes plans for a community garden, where residents can grow their own produce.

“This park will be a breakthrough for Ħal Għaxaq,” says Mayor Mario Cutajar. “It will not only provide a beautiful, safe space for our residents to enjoy, but it will also boost our town’s appeal to visitors and potential investors.”

Community Involvement

The local council has been actively involving residents in the planning process, holding public consultations and incorporating feedback into the design. “We want this to be a park by the people, for the people,” Cutajar adds.

Volunteers have also been stepping up, helping with clean-up efforts and even planting trees. “It’s amazing to see how proud people are of their town,” says volunteer Joseph Camilleri. “We’re all excited to see this park take shape.”

Works are expected to be completed by the end of the year, with the park set to open in early 2023. The project is being funded through a mix of local council funds and EU grants.
