PN Adviser’s Irony: Ġgantija Heights Project He Once Condemned, Now He Advises On

Standing at the entrance of the Ġgantija Temples in Xagħra, one can’t help but marvel at the ancient megalithic structures that have stood the test of time. Little did the Neolithic builders know that their legacy would one day be entangled in a political irony involving one of Malta’s leading political parties.

From ‘Scandalous’ to Adviser

In 2018, the Nationalist Party (PN) was up in arms over the proposed Ġgantija Heights project, a luxury development near the Ġgantija Temples. The party’s then spokesperson, Jason Azzopardi, labelled the project ‘scandalous’ and accused the Labour government of prioritizing ‘developers’ interests over the nation’s cultural heritage’. Fast forward to 2022, and the same party has appointed a key figure in that project, architect and developer Joseph F. Vella, as an adviser to its leader, Bernard Grech.

Vella’s Role and PN’s Response

Vella, who was involved in the Ġgantija Heights project as a consultant, now finds himself advising the PN on ‘urban development and planning’. The party, however, maintains that Vella’s appointment is not a contradiction of its past stance. A PN spokesperson stated, “Mr. Vella’s appointment is based on his professional expertise, not his past involvement in specific projects.” Yet, the irony is hard to miss, especially for those who recall the party’s strong opposition to the Ġgantija Heights project.

The Ġgantija Heights saga is a stark reminder of Malta’s complex political scene and the intricate web of relationships between politics, business, and development. It also raises questions about the role of political parties in holding developers accountable and the potential conflicts of interest that can arise when political figures are also involved in development projects.

As Malta continues to grapple with urban development and the preservation of its cultural heritage, the Ġgantija Heights project and Vella’s appointment serve as a case study in the complexities of political decision-making and the blurred lines between party politics and business interests.
