Ħal Għaxaq’s 25,000sqm Park: A Green Oasis Underway
Imagine a sprawling 25,000 square metre expanse of green, right in the heart of Ħal Għaxaq. This isn’t a dream, but a reality that’s taking shape. Works are underway to transform this vast plot of land into an open space that promises to breathe new life into the community.
From Farmland to Public Park
The site, located off Triq l-Indipendenza, has been earmarked for a public park since 2017. After years of planning and tender processes, the project has finally kicked off. The land, previously used for farming, is being reshaped to accommodate recreational facilities, walking paths, and green spaces.
What’s in Store for Ħal Għaxaq?
The new park is set to include a variety of amenities that cater to different age groups and interests. There will be a children’s play area, a senior citizens’ area, and even a dog park. The design also incorporates a large central square that could host community events and markets.
But it’s not just about the facilities. The park’s design is also focused on preserving and enhancing the natural environment. Plans include planting native trees and shrubs, creating a pond to attract local wildlife, and ensuring the park is accessible to all, including those with disabilities.
Progress and Challenges
Work on the site started in earnest in late 2021. The initial phase involves preparing the land, including soil testing, levelling, and drainage works. Despite some challenges, like the discovery of old farm structures that needed to be demolished, the project is on track.
Once the initial works are completed, the next phase will see the construction of the park’s infrastructure, followed by the landscaping. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2023, ready to welcome the first visitors.
Ħal Għaxaq’s mayor, Dr. Joseph Piscopo, expressed his excitement about the project, saying, “This park will not only provide much-needed green space but also bring our community together. We can’t wait to see it come to life.”
