PN Adviser Linked to Controversial Ġgantija Heights Project
Political Irony: PN Adviser Linked to Ġgantija Heights Project
Standing at the foot of Ġgantija Heights, one can’t help but marvel at the ancient megalithic temples. Yet, the view might soon be marred by a contentious development project, adding a twist of irony for the Nationalist Party (PN).
From Scandal to Involvement
Just a few years ago, the PN was vocal in its criticism of the Ġgantija Heights project, even going as far as to label it ‘scandalous’. Now, it’s emerged that a senior PN adviser, Dr. Tonio Depasquale, is involved in the very same project he once condemned.
Depasquale, a prominent lawyer and PN strategist, has been named as a director in a company, ‘Ġgantija Developments’, which is at the heart of the controversial project. The company plans to build luxury apartments and a hotel complex near the UNESCO World Heritage site.
Local Residents and Environmental Concerns
News of Depasquale’s involvement has sparked outrage among local residents and environmentalists. “We’ve been fighting this project for years, and now to find out that someone from the PN, who once criticized it, is involved… it’s a slap in the face,” said Maria Azzopardi, a resident of Xagħra.
Environmental groups have also expressed concern. “The project threatens the integrity of the Ġgantija Temples and the surrounding countryside,” said a spokesperson for Nature Trust Malta. “We urge the authorities to reconsider this project.”
When contacted, Dr. Depasquale declined to comment, stating that the project is still in its early stages and that any further discussion would be premature.
