Ħal Għaxaq’s Green Transformation: 25,000 sqm Park Underway
In the heart of Ħal Għaxaq, a small town in the south of Malta, a massive transformation is underway. A 25,000 square metre open space, roughly the size of 3.5 football fields, is being meticulously reshaped. But what’s in store for this vast expanse of land, and how will it change the face of Ħal Għaxaq?
From Farmland to Future Park
The site, located just off Triq San Pawl, was once a sprawling farm, its fertile soil yielding crops and its green expanse providing a serene backdrop to the town’s rural charm. Now, it’s being reimagined as a sprawling public park, a green lung set to breathe new life into Ħal Għaxaq.
What’s in Store for the New Park?
The plans for the new park are ambitious. The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) has approved a project that includes a children’s playground, a senior citizens’ area, a multi-purpose sports area, and extensive green spaces. There are also plans for a café and a kiosk, adding a touch of convenience to the park’s offerings.
But perhaps the most striking feature will be the park’s landscaping. The design, created by local architectural firm AP Valletta, incorporates native Maltese flora, creating a lush, eco-friendly space that blends seamlessly with the island’s natural beauty.
Community Engagement and Economic Boost
The park’s development is not just about creating a beautiful space; it’s also about engaging the community and boosting the local economy. Ħal Għaxaq Local Council has been actively involving residents in the planning process, holding public consultations to gather feedback and ideas.
the park is expected to draw visitors from across Malta, providing a boost to local businesses. “We’re already seeing an increase in interest from potential investors,” says Ħal Għaxaq Mayor, Mario Fava. “The park will not only be a green space but also an economic driver for our town.”
Challenges and Timeline
The project, with an estimated cost of €1.5 million, is not without its challenges. The site, once a farm, requires extensive soil remediation to ensure it’s safe for public use. The project is also being carried out in phases to ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding area.
Despite these challenges, the project is on track. The first phase, including the playground and senior citizens’ area, is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The entire project is slated for completion in 2023.
